At the 2014 Worldwide Developer’s Conference in June, Apple made a wide range of updates and announcements. As the App Store Optimization specialist for Sourcebits, a number of changes stood out to me as they’ll impact app marketing and ASO.
With iOS 8, Apple added several new tools to enhance the user experience and improve the way users discover apps on the App Store. In this blog post, I’ll discuss one of the new app discovery features coming soon – app video previews – and their impact on App Store Optimization practices.
One of the most awaited features on the App Store is finally here. With iOS 8, Apple now allows app publishers to upload a video preview of their app on App Store, similar to video previews on Google Play.
Video previews are a visually striking and sensory-rich way to show users what your app is about and to convince them to download it. They also provide a great opportunity to demonstrate how to use your app. On Google Play, apps with video previews tend to get better search rankings than apps without a video preview. Since the adoption of video previews is still so new in the App Store, the impact on search rankings is still unclear, but we’re hoping the results will be the same for Apple.
Since a demo video can serve multiple purposes – in addition to the stores, it can be used on your promotional site, in your media outreach, in email campaigns, and user acquisition ads – invest in getting high-quality content.
Want to learn more about videos and App Store Optimization? Sourcebits recently published a free ebook – App Store Optimization: A Complete Guide. Chapter 5 covers making supporting visuals like screenshots and videos. The above tips come from page 56, and the book also includes examples from RetailMeNot, Draft Kings, Yahoo Mail and Need for Speed Most Wanted.
