The Future of Wearables: Wearing Happiness via Technology

future of wearables

Episode 8 in The Future of Wearables podcast features John C. Havens, author of The H(app)iness Project and contributing writer for Mashable, The Guardian and Slate. His work focuses on helping people increase their well-being through the use of emerging technology. During the conversation, he discusses the form factors and user experiences of wearables – and how they inform culture and have the potential to increase an individual’s happiness.

Find out what Havens thinks about something he calls “life management platform data,” plus his views on changes in wearable technology today that will impact the future. And read on for our team’s tips for creating apps to increase user happiness with sticky design.

Stickiness is anything about a mobile app design that encourages the user to remain engaged and “stick” around longer. When it comes to the successful design of mobile apps, it’s all about functional simplicity. Instagram, for example, knows this well. An impressive 35% of Instagram’s 300 Million active users check Instagram multiple times a day and use the app for approximately 21 minutes every day.

Your checklist for sticky mobile app design:

Self-explanatory with no learning curve – use familiar visual metaphors to encourage familiar behaviors.

Friendly language – offer a limited number of clear calls to action.

Instant gratification – balance freedom to explore and guidance to reach the workflow goal as efficiently as possible.

Good perceived performance – users need to sense something is happening (such as the load time when waiting for an image).

Create “golden nuggets” – these small delightful interactions aren’t functionally essential, but are crucial to great user experience.

We love working with clients that seek our mobile design and app development services – and they’ve asked us to create awesome apps for the wearable tech market. A great example of a recent project: Vuzix and their enterprise smart glasses.

If you’re thinking about entering the wearable tech market or have an existing app that you’d like to reimagine for the Apple Watch, smart glasses or other devices – you’ve come to the right place.
