Cricbuzz App Tops Charts After Sourcebits Redesign

Cricbuzz Logo.

Last week another Sourcebits-designed app hit #1 in the App Store. We’ve developed more than 20 chart-topping products for our clients, and we wanted to share some insights into how we did it for Cricbuzz. We also want to give a hand to our hard-working, talented team of designers and engineers.

The first version of Cricbuzz was a well-loved app among cricket fans, but they needed a significant redesign and relaunch to enhance their app and stay competitive in the market. That’s when they came to Sourcebits—to revamp the mobile presence of the fastest and most reliable cricket news and commentary.

The first phase in our redesign of the app launched on November 19. In less than a week it made the “What’s Hot” list, and has reached #1 for iPhone sports apps in the Indian App Store, and #3 for sports on iPad.

Check out some of the user reviews:

1. “New version is simply stunning and gels really well with iOS.”

2. “Superb changeover…Good job guys. Really a cool app to have on iPad.”

3. “I’ve been looking for a cricket app to easily keep track of scores and results. I was using Cricinfo, but recently switched to this. Way better! And the new update has made it almost perfect. Simple, clean and very functional.”

Here’s where we started:

Given the high quality and good reviews of the existing app, we knew that building a relaunch/redesign of Cricbuzz would have to be a careful process. With that in mind, we decided to focus on enhancing the app’s performance and UI.

This is the mockup that Cricbuzz provided. Most of this design and interface is based closely off of the Cricbuzz web UI.

Here’s our redesign:

This is the Sourcebits-designed rework. Note the color balance, and the increased emphasis on visual elements.

Aside from providing a silky smooth browsing experience, the new design blends the iPhone and iPad experience into one seamless UX. We’ve managed to retain the powerful features of the old app, all wrapped up into a beautiful new design and backed by some intuitive new interaction methods.

iPhone - Touch point

We created an interaction method for this app that we call “Touch Point.” With Touch Point, we provide access to a simple menu and navigation features without sacrificing screen space. Instead of a menu bar at the bottom, we use an unobtrusive, semi-transparent bubble that unfolds into an array of menu options.

It’s easy to pop out when you need it, and when you don’t, you can just press and hold to hide it away. Even at its most visible, it’s easy to read and browse when the Touch Point is shown.

We’re proud of the work we’ve done for Cricbuzz, and we can do the same for you. If you’re looking to take your app design and UX to the next level, contact us.
