The watch may be the next big thing in connected devices. But the current marketplace includes wearables like Pebble and Metawatch that lack the ability to display a lot of information in an elegant and simple way. And lukewarm reviews of the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch got us thinking about what Apple might do – what an iWatch should be.
We decided to have some fun and let nine of our developers put together a concept. that would have broad appeal. If the rumors about Apple developing a smartwatch are true, here’s what we hope comes out of the R&D lab. Here was the ONLY prompt we gave our design team:
“We’re designing the iWatch. Do not do any searching – go into this completely fresh.” ~ Ben George, Creative Director
Here are the initial concepts our team sketched out:
An iWatch wrist-band concept complete with a magnetic clasp.
An iWatch concept that takes an anachronistic approach by using the look of a traditional analog watch.
An iWatch concept that is inspired by the first iPod design’s scroll wheel for user interaction.
An iWatch concept that uses a metal band concept and minimizes some of your favorite apps.
As you can see, our iWatch team took a varied approach to how this concept might look. From analog faces to displays from the future, our designers conceptualized everything.
Our three primary concerns about the design emphasized:
Display: A successful design will provide maximum visibility while also keeping the device as mobile and non-intrusive as possible.
Situational awareness: Everything you need should always be at your fingertips – and the iWatch combines geolocation with learned behaviors to get familiar with exactly what you need, when you need it.
Seemless integration: Given the Apple universe, the iWatch needs to bring your Macbook and your iPhone right to your wrist.
Here’s what our Head of Design, Gary Howe, had to say about iWatch:
“The iWatch should adapt around you so you don’t need to manually engage with it for longer than 5 seconds durations. If the engagement is longer than that, the user would just pull out their iPhone and use that instead. Which defeats the purpose.
The iWatch dynamically changes its UI/promotes apps to display the information that is relevant to you. At-a-glance engagements based on quick situation aware interactions.”
And here’s what one of our Senior Creative Director, David Forgash, had to say:
“For the iWatch project, we wanted to build a prototype that could function in today’s technology world. This means that we based everything off the iPhone 5s running iOS 7 for functionality and constraints.
The key user stories we focused on were Situational Awareness and Interaction with the iWatch. The later proved to be one of the most difficult tasks we faced; thankfully Apple had Siri and with some sharp thinking we leveraged the technology beautifully.”
We created the iWatch concept for one reason: we know we could build it and delight people across the world. Why didn’t we build it? Because we’re too busy making products for our long list of excellent clients.
